OK, now I have to eat humble pie. Upon checking the milk today in Mercadona I realised that I got it mixed up with another desnatada milk on the shelf above, in bottles and priced at â,¬1.19 each. The skimmed milk is priced at 77cents, still more than Dia but not the increase I thought. Sorry folks, going for a lie down in a darkened room.

Rod

A lot of people like milk, in their coffee or tea etc. and would not like it without. Good for children as well and older people for their bones, that is why we drink skimmed milk.
Stopping buying milk is not the answer as it is a staple food item.

Back to original post ! shoppers have two choices buy the milk or not, moaning about the price will accomplish nothing.

There is a further choice and that is buying milk from the cheapest source consistent with quality. I thought Rod's original post was quite useful as it showed there was a significant difference in price between Mercadona and Dia

With the cost of electricity increasing and the additional cost of heating the milk to 135 degrees its not surprising that UHT  has increased in price. Also with the cost of fuel for delivery companies doubling it will only continue to increase.
Also Nutritionally, UHT milk is slightly poorer than fresh pasteurised milk; it contains around a third less iodine, and the quality of protein degrades during storage.
We find it doesn't taste anything like milk but each to their own.

"I have found these last few years that Johnson et al want to take our hard earned money and squander it on grandiose schemes that don't work".

Like being ahead of the game with COVID?  Correct.  Total waste of money.  Should have let everybody die!

Well you say ahead of the game with Covid, really Byrney ?

A report from the Health and Social Care Committee and the Science and Technology Committee, found the late lockdown at the start of the pandemic in March 2020 is "one of the most important public health failures the United Kingdom has ever experienced."

And according to the National Audit Office report on the subject of Covid, the British government failed to "act on warnings" raised during pandemic simulations held before 2020 and wasn't "fully prepared" for "wide-ranging impacts" of the COVID-19 pandemic

And of course there was Matt Hancock's infamous assurance that there was a protective ring around care homes

I could go on but I think I have made my point

However, I guess with the passage of time people forget events like that more especially when they listen to and accept Johnson's version of events.

In terms of the Covid vaccination programme,  Yes it was one of Johnson's few success stories. I have never claimed that the covid vaccination programme was one of those grandiose schemes, which were a waste of money. So your choice of this to defend the undefendable was as strange as it was predictable

I still stick to what I said in my previous post

Only one answer get a socialist government in, then we can be even poorer but all in it together  .
I always find it funny these experts have all the answers once they've moved on Tets

Well that is one way of looking at it Ang

I have found these last few years that Johnson et al want to take our hard earned money and squander it on grandiose schemes that don't work.

But the big difference is that while Johnsons spending makes most of us poorer it does favour the few (their mates) who receive large sums of our money for services rendered in the name of the conservative party

And as for Johnson's slogan that we are all in in it together, well you can forget that as events have shown

Just my take on the situation Ang

Richard

Oh and back on the subject of milk I normally use soya milk with my breakfast cereal and cup of tea. I cant remember whether it is cheaper than cows milk in Spain but it certainly is in the UK

Rod

Johnny, I have been to Ireland and do love it and the people. I had two wonderful Irish aunts who were a light in my life growing up. What I could not hack is the weather and cost of living.
Enjoy your stay and thank goodness milk is not â,¬6 a pint but I love the black stuff.
By the way Elgin they probably made a mistake in the pricing but desnatada, skimmed, was priced up at â,¬1.19 last Wednesday and that was a special price if you bought 6 at a time. I took careful notice as I was going to buy a large amount of it but went to Dia instead. As mentioned before I notice that semi was still the lower price and thought that it was because they had to move the old stock.

yes but Ang this is deep state not politics ie the money movers and shakers that control the politics King was a  finance Brexiteer.....   but he is right  they movers should have had interest rates up years ago ,we have a generation of tit fed cheap money borrowers that have never seen 10,12,15 % loan rates for homes and or bling that will be sat in a 40 %  over valued homes loaned up the the hilt  with a 35mpg chucki merc sat on the drive probable  8 salary checks away from banki & repro

and as for fuels & energy its going to be a very long expensive haul ,unless our governments want to finance the USSR  war machine ,personally i would rather wear two per of jim jams in winter .....assuming europe gets through the Ukraine/USSR  crisis ( ie WW3 Light at the moment with the super powers head to head with USSR boots on the ground and Nato supplying the Ukraine the   tool/ slow them downs.....thankfully  )
Analogue mechanically  trained 1970,s Fitter  dear living  in a gone digital/tecno mad O Dearie me world......thankfully left behind with it all ,enjoying the bliss of NO phones ,  apps and  shortage of the intellectual, wile still managing to hone underachievement on the day to day in the sun  lol

Johnny73

Sorry Rod for upsetting you . Milk is only 1.25 in Ireland today , it's the pint of the black stuff that's 6 euro. ( Scandalous )
I know , don't buy it .  You would love Ireland Rod , they moan about the weather and the price   of  things same as you including the beer whilst they are in the pub and  then have another one.
We are heading for the US on our tour next so something else not to complain about.
Life's too short  happy Tuesday 🌝🌝

Elgin

I bought Mercadona's own brand UHT milk yesterday.  Full fat was 79c per litre (on shelf and till receipt).

"Milk is what it is and a pint is 6 euro.
Get a grip for goodness sake. Be thankful for what you have".
Well, I do try to keep a grip as you say and I am thankful for my life here in Spain but a 63% increase in a basic food line for me is horrendous. It matter not a jot that the price of milk in Ireland is â,¬6 a pint, I could not afford to live there anyway and would not want to if I could. It is the price of everyday items in Spain that matter to me.

Dave S

Cheese seems also to be affected. A block of cheese cost E2.40 ten days ago. Same block (type and weight) yesterday cost E3.00

byrney

We will Johnny. To be sure.  Enjoy your stay in Ireland, and just keep looking at your bank balance!

Johnny73

We are wandering in Ireland at the moment and the cheapest wine in a shop is 10 euro and 28 in a restaurant. Milk is what it is and a pint is 6 euro.
Get a grip for goodness sake. Be thankful for what you have.
Won't even mention what it costs to drop stuff off at the recycling.
Enjoy the Guvnor for a few euro.

recordman

Check the till receipt too as the price on the display might not be accurate.  I visited the Mercadona in Vera recently and the price on the shelf of the Missus' favourite wine was â,¬2.30, but upon checkout it came up at â,¬2.40.

â,¬2.40 is the normal price, we buy it frequently in other Mercadonas.

Rod

Yes, noticed that semi was still the lower price but thought this was because it is old stock. Skimmed milk is always cheaper than semi or full cream so this can be the only reason it is cheaper. Will check again this Wednesday when we do our shopping.

Went into Mercadona today and was going to purchase our usual skimmed UHT milk.... > last week the unit price was 73cents. Today the unit price for Mercadona brand skimmed milk is â,¬1.19. Went down to Dia and it is still 73cents there.

In Mercadona today [Monday 27th June], the Hacendado Semidesnatada milk was 78c per litre [compared with 74c on 1st June]... The Hacendado Entera milk was 79c per litre.

San Juan

Same in the UK.  Butter in Asda £1.75 but £2 everywhere else. I think it depends on how much stock there is in warehouses.  2 weeks ago Aldi had unsalted butter for £1.75 and salted for £2, now both are £2 a pack. Most things increasing in price, except cheese. Elmlea UHT cream £1 in Asda and £1.45 everywhere else. Pays to shop around these days.

Dave S

Mercadona prices overall have increased dramatically. It is now much cheaper to sop in Llidl

byrney

Bargain mate. Tough times.

Rod

Went into Mercadona today and was going to purchase our usual skimmed UHT milk. I know it has gone up in leaps and bounds lately but today took the biscuit. If you buy their own brand mild it is cheaper to buy 6 at a time and last week the unit price was 73cents. Today the unit price for Mercadona brand skimmed milk is â,¬1.19. Went down to Dia and it is still 73cents there.
