I use both i.e. I use the roman candle like things but still get the chimney swept.  The Roman Candle things do seem to make a difference when used correctly but don't necessarily clean the whole flue.

Do those fire sticks that look like roman candles and the powder sachets that can be burnt on the fire keep the chimney free of soot or do you need to have the chimney swept as well.
