POOR SOIL

We have poor soil so we concentrated on just one area, lots of horse manure, homemade compost, waste compost from potted plants and anything we thought might help, it took years, but it worked. Pity it’s such a small part of our garden, the rest of it we put in trees, and then laid gravel everywhere, looks quite good in the end.

Hi. Please tell me how to improve the soil / compost that i buy from anywhere?
I can only grow in pots out and inside but that stuff does not look or feel like soil and it does not retain any moisture.
