To All Members.

For those members that missed the last meeting we are holding a Begonia growing competition.
You can buy one or two begonia bulbs for 50 centimos each and there is a major cash prize for the best bloom at a date to be notified this summer.
There are also prizes for 2nd and 3rd.

If you missed getting your begonias and want to enter then Bev will have a supply at Group of Friends available this coming Tuesday.

Instructions
February or March is the right time to start off the begonia tubers. Where possible, try and ensure they are planted the right way up. This is not always as easy as it seems.
The concave or hollow part should be facing upwards. However, if this is causing a headache put them in on their side and the shoots will grow upright naturally.
The best way to get begonias off to a good start is to put them in a tray containing damp peat, or an alternative, at a temperature of around 64 deg F and allow them to protrude above the soil level. Once the risk of frost has gone the begonias can be planted out wherever you wish them to grow.
After the begonias have flowered the tubers can be taken out of their containers, placed on newspaper to allow them to dry thoroughly and then covered in dry peat at a fairly cool temperature until next spring.
It is essential that the tubers are kept completely dry, otherwise they will rot off during the winter and you will have to get out your purse again next January.
