Love or hate her?

[sic]Tonight I shall go and have a drink for Margaret Thatcher's death. I shall raise my glass to the night sky, and THANK HER, and celebrate her life. People on this seem to have a very strange view of history. So here are a few little nuggets with how and more specifically WHY a lot of industries were destroyed by her, and what's more, destroyed with the MANDATE OF THE BRITISH PEOPLE. The seventies were blighted by the trade unions waiting for winter and then coming out on strike at it's heart. Holding the country to ransom for ANNUAL pay rises of up to 36% ABOVE inflation. This was the likes of Scargill and co. And they bled us dry. We were bankrupted by them. And then the Winter of Discontent happened. And they ALL came out. Miners, power workers, transport workers; even funeral directors, everything tied into the TGWU came out. My own grandparents lay on a slab for 2 months waiting to be buried. The entire country was a ruin. Rubbish not collected for months, rats everywhere. And the unions laughed, and brought down Callaghan's Labour Government. And Thatcher stood up at the General Election and made ONE SIMPLE PROMISE. Elect me. And THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. ELECT ME AND I WILL DESTROY THEM. She won a landslide. On that promise. And she became the last elected Prime Minister to actually hold true to her election promise. She did exactly what she said. She utterly destroyed the unions. Obliterated them. The cost was those industries. We knew that would be the price. But we would not allow them to hold us to ransom again. What she did, she did with our BLESSING. The socialists and people who backed those strikes have only themselves to blame for what happened. Baroness Thatcher didn't destroy those industries and communities for fun or as part of a class war. She did it to stop them holding the country to ransom again. And then she held the purse strings tight and re-built the economy and the country and Britain again stood tall and thrived. And we won back the global respect we had lost while the left wing ruled. In the Falklands we were thankful for her being in office. Those of us who went 'south' in '82 did so knowing we had a leader who would not - and did not- interfere. She sent the military and allowed us to do our job. Gave us the money, the equipment and most of all THE FREEDOM to get the job done. Our lands had been invaded. We had a gun up our nose. SHE led us. Frankly Thatcher took a very broken Britain by the hand like a strict old fashioned Matron and LED THE COUNTRY BACK TO WHERE IT HAD ONCE BEEN. We were the worlds 3rd major power in ALL respects. And as for the world, it has NEVER been safer than when Thatcher was in Downing Street, Reagan was in the White House and Gorbachev was in the Kremlin as the three spoke DAILY. They laid the ground for the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Russians were TERRIFIED of her. And the world again feared Britain. And lets not forget that she gave people the full right to buy their own council property. Her vision was that the TENNANT and the tennant alone could buy that property. As soon as her party stabbed her in the back the feeding frenzy began as under her the famous Tory grandee greed was held in check. So they stabbed her, led by the europro traitor ponce Heseltine - who didn't have the guts to face her openly and alone - they arranged her removal. And we have been a broken patsy for europe ever since. So yes, tonight I will celebrate the death of Baroness Thatcher, with thanks, with respect, and with sadness, because she allowed me to know what we could be, what we could achieve, what it meant to be BRITISH.

I think the whole forum is very well aware of your feelings about Margaret Thatcher, Keith but history is history and neither you or anyone else can change it.

Keith

nibbler

I have been respectful to all other posters views on here, maybe you and your ilk should do the same.

Take care and God Bless.

Did you not win the coconut ???

Keep up

King saint 76

Still here Keith, still haven't explained how Thatcher murdered members of your family in 1972.

Keith

It was the 11 scottish nats, aka the tartan tories, who voted with the english tories that brought down the  Labour government, 311 to 310 if I recall.

And boy did they pay for it, fools.

Keith

clair32

You really don't have a clue.

Read your history.
..................................

I have btw, it didn't take too long for some to bite.

Queen Clare Shirley

Well as we can see The UK has gone from strength to strength since......................

My question as a child when she took office, how many of you benefited from Thatchers rule. My Parents did, they prospered and thanks to her bought a second home in Spain and then we moved here in 88

My in laws thank her because thanks to her they were able to purchase their council house and start on the property ladder which they wouldn't have been able to without that . In regards to Keiths comments about council housing. If they didnt provide it now, what would people do,crikey they might have to go out and work and provide themselves with a house, there are no council houses in Spain just housing association.

I suppose Labour was doing a bang up job before she took power...... oh yeah they had a loss of confidence vote and a general election was called so thats how she got in. HMMMMM.

ILLIA RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Arrived Torrevieja 5th November 1988

I think I have identified who Keith is and what he represents.  Of course the IRA did nothing at all did they.  All of them totally innocent of any wrong doing.  They never went out murdering innocent people did they. That was all in our imagination.  It is clear that there is only one reason you hate Maggie and that is because you have been indoctrinated by the garbage that spued out of the IRA propaganda machine.  If you were a young boy when Maggie stopped school milk you could not have been around for Bloody Sunday.

If you find happiness, people may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.
Give your best anyway.
For you see, in the end, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway."

Keith

Sadly for some of you not gone.

Thick Irishman you see.

Something that has been troubling me.....why are all you maggie lovers not living in the wonderfull country that she made,
you are living in a land that has virtually no work, a land that has not long come out of oppression, maybe it's cos maggie loved yer man franco.

Thatchers Legacy

Millions of council houses sold off,now we
have a shortage of council houses on an
unprecedented scale.

Steel works closed thousands made redundant,
now we have to import steel where as we used to
make some of the finest in the world.

Ship yards closed thousands made redundant now
we have to have them made else where, we used to
make some of the finest in the world.

Coal mines closed thousand made redundant, mining
communties destroyed, mines flooded so they could
not be reopened and much of the land sold off to her city
paymasters.

Car manufacturing industry destroyed ,thousands
made redundant, now we have foreign companys
operating this sector.

Public services sold off to city spivs, now we are
charged over the odds for Gas, Electric , Water
Rail Travel. Bus travel etc,etc

Schools that are not fit for purpose being knocked
down and rebuilt by private finances that then bleed
the life blood out of local councils.

No manfacturing base worth speaking of left, were
once we were the workshop of Europe, our kids
now scambling for a job at fast food outlets that
exploit them with wages that no one can live on.

Called people fighting for natural justice terrorists.
Armed , financed and advised along with her American
paymasters.

The Afghans and Al Queda who went on to murder and decimate their own people.

Set up units within the british armed forces that colluded
with the police and loyalist paramilitaries to brutalise the
the Catholic communities in Nothern Ireland
Put the country into the hand of the london spivs or bankers
as they are called, and we are continuing to pay the price
for that and will do for many a year.

Said that there was no such thing as society and communities
only the individual, this had led us to were we are today, post
the yuppies and the self centred ideology of the me me me society.

Sent thousands of young men and women to the other side of the
world to die on a pretence, when in reality she was using them to prop
up her own dwindling popularity and get herself re-elected.

A woman who wrecked the country and was ditched by her
own, when she became a liability, the men in grey suits have
no morals.

The fawning of the womens death is truly gut wrenching,

Lynne

Exactly Zilnor, I agree with you 100%.  Just a couple of extracts from something I read this morning:

'Why give all the insensitive and downright insulting comments the oxygen of publicity?  It only encourages those who were, sadly for them, 'educated' under New Labour, and who were not around when Mrs Thatcher transformed the country after the usual mess left by a Labour government'.

'Those quick to slate her forget that she was also a much loved mother and wife, have some respect for her family and friends at this sad time'.
You can't always control who walks into your life...but you CAN control which window you throw them out of.

Those who support Mrs T attribute to her great qualities of leadership. I wonder why then given her abilities the Tories conspired so successfully to sack her causing her to leave office in tears?

because they were a bunch of educated, spineless ,public payed  elected txssxers, whom were only intrested in saving there own backsides / seats  and not streightening out the UK  as she did.   :tiphat:

I have to say that I  never understood the poll tax riots. What is wrong with every  adult living in the same house, paying their share  of the "rates", as it was originally known.? It never seemed fair to me that a property occupied by one person  had the same rateable value ( and bill) as the next door house in which two or more  adults lived.
Margaret Thatcher had her faults and made mistakes, but she did her best for her country. She took the unions down and in my view, that  was one of her best achievements. If she was so unpopular as some on here are saying, why did her party win a landslide election after the Falklands war ? I am a woman and  I have tremendous respect for her because she was the first woman to get the top job in UK politics.
It does not matter which political party you support, the country as a whole becomes disillusioned after one party has been in power for a some years.  :wave

Exactly & as I posted previously the mistake was to think that the 'officials' in local councils would implement it logically & sensibly. They just saw the pound signs & assumed they'd be able fund an even more profligate & grandiose schemes .

Morning, sorry I'm late.

Ref the Belgrano sinking it saved lots of lives mine and fellow soldiers. That ship had immense firepower and had to go.

Absolutely. It was war. The Argentine Admirals admitted after the war, that had the tables been reversed they would have done exactly the same. Just imagine the outcry there would have been if she had sunk some of our task force - a carrier for instance? As you say she had the fire power to do so.

You took the words right out of my mouth Saint 76. I was in local government when the Community Charge came in and even predicated her downfall in a end of rates party poem. It was good in principle but totally uncollectable, should left certain categories out.
All the accusations being thrown at her on this forum shows the divide that still exists in the UK, and as been suggested by other formers, not everything was her fault, but it is easy to blame someone who can no longer defend her actions. But I'm glad she was in power when she was, she certainly had my vote everytime.

AndrewBayley

There are many comments about Maggie stopping free school milk.  She did not, the policy had already been decided before she became minister of education, she just had to implement a predetermined policy, she was not involved in the decision.

Keith, sorry about my spelling mistake i was on of the uneducated who ended up doing qiute well under Thatcher, ie buying my council house, re mortgaging it and selling it to fund my buisness, with the minor/minor i was thinking of the joke below when i typed it.

What Margret Thatcher and Gary Glitter got in come ? they both fxxxxd minors

Disgusting thing to post... you are definitely showing your lack of education

Sapper

The mines were not productive made no profit and had to go. The police did not start the violence the unions did. It was Arthur Scargill who thought he should have more power than the government. By the way he didn't lose on the deal got one hell of a wage even after he retired out for himself !!i

Bloody Sunday. We will never know the truth have you been to war I have and its never clear cut. If there hadn't been a riot or demo no one would have died that day.

Ref the Belgrano sinking it saved lots of lives mine and fellow soldiers. That ship had immense firepower and had to go.

Keith, like others I'm keenly awaiting your explanation as to how Thatcher was responsible for the Bloody Sunday shootings?

I'm also intrigued to know what Thatcher did wrong by inviting Jimmy Saville round for xmas lunch? Or did you know at the time that he was a peado, if so, why on earth didn't you speak out then in the public interest?

nibbler

Keith. For someone who said  a few posts ago it was your last you really do have verbal diarrhoea, and most of what's coming out of your mouth is S**t anyway so why not make us all happy and say your final piece. I think we all know how you feel about the Baroness by know.

Keith you still haven't explained your statement on bloody Sunday.
How did she murder your family members?
You blame her for everything that is wrong in your life.
As has been said before , not popular or particularly nice, but things had to change.

I would hate her if she had not stood  up for my country and let terrorists, millitants, the Argies, Europe...  etc, take liberties with GB
Blaming her for IRA hunger strikers deaths is just ridiculous.

Tetley

Well were certainly are a  mixed bunch this end  ,all we need now is comrade Scargill to join us  :o and we can have a real debate (once we get the lectric back on  ;D )

morning citizens were on  uk  manufactering to day in the nerve centre   :)

Keith I agree with everything you say but unfortunately you are wasting your breath.
The people who support Thatcher and her ideas are quite often just as selfish and greedy as she was
Do not waste your fingers typing
I hold the opinion that any working person who votes Conservative is stupid and led as sheep, this is clearly proven on here by the comments made by people in support of the worst leader the UK has ever seen
These same people probably oppose what the other extreme right winger leadership of Merkel and look at how that is turning out for the rest Europe.
She is exactly the same as Thatcher so why do they want to leave the EU see led stupidity
However I think they will not let the royals escape the funeral even if she is in a wheel chair

Keith

pompey

Fair play to you, but you did it all by yourself.

What do you want me to say, getting on your bike, I did the same, and no thanks to maggie.

Now if I wanted to be pedantic, I would not be calling my friends minors, miners.... no....no offence intended.

Here's a wee list, feel free to add to it

1. She supported the retention of capital punishment
2. She destroyed the country's manufacturing industry
3. She voted against the relaxation of divorce laws
4. She abolished free milk for schoolchildren ("Margaret Thatcher, Milk Snatcher")
5. She supported more freedom for business (and look how that turned out)
6. She gained support from the National Front in the 1979 election by pandering to the fears of immigration
7. She gerrymandered local authorities by forcing through council house sales, at the same time preventing councils from spending the money they got for selling houses on building new houses (spending on social housing dropped by 67% in her premiership)
8. She was responsible for 3.6 million unemployed – the highest figure and the highest proportion of the workforce in history and three times the previous government. Massaging of the figures means that the figure was closer to 5 million
9. She ignored intelligence about Argentinian preparations for the invasion of the Falkland Islands and scrapped the only Royal Navy presence in the islands
10. The poll tax
11. She presided over the closure of 150 coal mines; we are now crippled by the cost of energy, having to import expensive coal from abroad
12. She compared her "fight" against the miners to the Falklands War
13. She privatised state monopolies and created the corporate greed culture that we've been railing against for the last 5 years
14. She introduced the gradual privatisation of the NHS
15. She introduced financial deregulation in a way that turned city institutions into avaricious money pits
16. She pioneered the unfailing adoration and unquestioning support of the USA
17. She allowed the US to place nuclear missiles on UK soil, under US control
18. Section 28
19. She opposed anti-apartheid sanctions against South Africa and described Nelson Mandela as "that grubby little terrorist"
20. She support the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia and sent the SAS to train their soldiers
21. She allowed the US to bomb Libya in 1986, against the wishes of more than 2/3 of the population
22. She opposed the reunification of Germany
23. She invented Quangos
24. She increased VAT from 8% to 17.5%
25. She had the lowest approval rating of any post-war Prime Minister
26. Her post-PM job? Consultant to Philip Morris tobacco at $250,000 a year, plus $50,000 per speech
27. The Al Yamamah contract
28. She opposed the indictment of Chile's General Pinochet
29. Social unrest under her leadership was higher than at any time since the General Strike
30. She presided over interest rates increasing to 15%
31. BSE
32. She presided over 2 million manufacturing job losses in the 79-81 recession
33. She opposed the inclusion of Eire in the Northern Ireland peace process
34. She supported sanctions-busting arms deals with South Africa
35. Cecil Parkinson, Alan Clark, David Mellor, Jeffrey Archer, Jonathan Aitkin
36. Crime rates doubled under Thatcher
37. Black Wednesday – Britain withdraws from the ERM and the pound is devalued. Cost to Britain – £3.5 billion; profit for George Soros – £1 billion
38. Poverty doubled while she opposed a minimum wage
39. She privatised public services, claiming at the time it would increase public ownership. Most are now owned either by foreign governments (EDF) or major investment houses. The profits don't now accrue to the taxpayer, but to foreign or institutional shareholders.
40. She cut 75% of funding to museums, galleries and other sources of education
41. In the Thatcher years the top 10% of earners received almost 50% of the tax remissions
42. 21.9% inflation
43. had Jimmy Savile round for Xmas lunch,..............................................I would Say Christmass, but not in her case.

Keith, if thatcher was hated by more people than those who liked her, how come she kept getting re elected as pm ?
Im actually from a welsh mining community,  i was not a minor but had many frends that was, i worked at a factory that supplied mines and due to pit closures i lost my job, obviously i hated thatcher at that time, but i got on my bike, a phrase used by a mp recently and seeked work, i ended up setting up a mobile mechanic buisness, bought my council house, remortgaged it and set up a permanent mechnic workshop, set up car sales and ended up with a chain of main car dealerships, now retired and left the buisness to my family, so i think she done me a huge favour and i have friends who was ex minors who have simular stories , so i thank you maggie with all my heart and r.i.p.
I now wait for the abuse i will get for being a greedy entrepenuar if thats how you spell it, but i think its human nature to want to better yourselves but im sure there will be some new age traveller types that will not agree, by the way i knocked 3 old oak trees down to build my garage, lol

Keith

You just mourn the murdering bitch.

You will never change my opinion of her, nor will I change yours.

Deffo my last on her.

The Iron Lady.....Rust in Peace.

And I am looking forward to reading what you all say about the Queen when she can't be bothered to attend her funeral, will say it all IMO.

Compassion for Thatcher? Like the compassion she showed when ordering the Belgrano to be torpedoed? Or when backing the apartheid regime in South Africa and calling Mandela a terrorist? Her support for Pinochet in Chile? When she stood and watched as the hunger strikers died? One of whom was a family member, wrong side, naw, right side IMO.

She saw the South African government  as a bulwark against Soviet-backed communism in Africa and refused  to back sanctions against them and at the same time dismissed the ANC as a terrorist organisation. She was wrong and later realised her mistake (those who make no mistakes in life make nothing!) And welcomed Mandela to Downing Street after his prison release.

Admiral Enrique Molina Pico (head of the Argentine Navy in the 1990s) in 2005 wrote that the Belgrano was part of an operation that posed a real threat to the British task force, but was holding off for tactical reasons. Pico added that "To leave the exclusion zone was not to leave the combat zone to enter a protected area,  Thatcher was thus totally justified in sinking the Belgrano in her efforts to protect our own armed forces.

The fact that Pinochet was accused of embezzlement, some human rights violations and corruption (a number of European leaders are not so innocent) does not alter the fact that Pinochet was an ally during the 1982 Falklands War and brought democracy to Chile.

As far as the imprisoned IRA / Loyalist  hunger strikers who died well frankly they themselves chose a criminal lifestyle and then subsequently to starve themselves – entirely their own fault!

As far as those having parties to celebrate MTs death they should be ashamed of themselves and that includes the likes of George Galloway the Respect MP for Bradford West, who today tweeted -  "Tramp the dirt down" on his feed - the name of a song by Elvis Costello in which he attacks the former Conservative prime minister.
Malayan proverb - Don't think there are no crocodiles because the water is calm.
