problems with my ivy

I have now taken drastic measures and cut the ivy back to a little stump - the rest was pretty dead so fingers crossed new shoots may be on the way - every day I learn a little more !

could anyone give me a little advice please.  Last year I planted out 2 ivy plants in a trough on my roof terrace - all was well until this year - all the leaves are dropping off at a rapid rate and there are no signs of beasties. I thought these were hardy and needed little attention.  not sure wether to cut them back or leave them....many thanks for your time
