In Ibiza I used to water mine little and often and they were perfect every year. As said before here I suspect if they are splitting prematurely it is a watering issue. Using no or little water will reduce the size and quantity of fruits as can be seen in the ones gone wild in the campo, John.

P.S. The young tree I have this year in a pot has taken unbelievable amounts of water every day and a week of someone else watering (Obviously not enough) had a dramatic effect on the leaves and many went yellow.............

When the fruit starts to split it means they are ready to eat.  If you want to store the fruit through winter you need to pick the fruit before it splits, then hang them up.  So I doubt there is a health problem with your tree.

help needed cure for the fruits that get to tennis size then split, the tree is healthy and green this as happend for the last two yaers and i have sprayed with neem in the spring , any advice would be welcome, thanks peter.
