What is it called??

No it's not sheltered at all, although been in for 4 years now, we did have frost damage to other plants but this one was just fine.  They don't like a lot of water nor getting the trunk wet.

Thanks for that, it's just that our friends lost theirs in the frost a couple of months ago.  It was in their garden and they wondered whether it should have been inside.  Is yours in a very sheltered spot?

It looks like a Beaucarnia Recurvata also known as 'Ponytail palm' or 'Bottle palm', we have one actually planted in the garden.  They are native to south-east Mexico.
