I doubt the "extra" subs would cover the costs of buying the rights for Spain, especially when they would also be competing with the Spanish broadcasters, who have more of a market in Spain,  for the rights to those programmes in Spain also.

But then it is simply not just "sky" - it is all the broadcasters, all the channels and all the programmes they carry that would have to have their rights bought. All in competition with all the Spanish channels....who have a large market already.

Which is why many of the channels and programmes on Sky are also on Canal+/ Digital Plus and other Spanish channels....So there is no reason for Sky / UK broadcasters to buy rights for Spain.

And even if BSKyB did buy Digital+, it does not meant that all the UK channels would be available on "Spanish Sky" - some yes, like they are today, but don't expect UK Gold / BBC / ITV / to be on Spanish Sky... maybe BBC Entertainment which is the BBCs expat channel.... which is also available in Spain to subscribe to....

I know you can get Sky UK on the existing satellite dish if you have a Sky subscription - he only channels we have lost are the BBCs and the ITVs. We can, of course, watch them via Filmon or hola.org with no problem at all. We have no intention of buying a bigger dish as we don't really watch enough TV to justify it. It would just be great if Sky would extend their UK licence to a bit further south! They would get the sub money anyway though maybe not enough to make it worth their while.

Or subscribe to Canal+ the main satellite tv provider in Spain... offering many of the same channels and programmes as other pay tv operators in Europe - and many UK / US imports available in English.

BSkyB operate in the UK - and is available in Spain - on Astra 28 - with a Sky UK subscription
Sky Italia operate in Italy - and is able to be received in Spain - on Astra 19 with a Sky Italia subscription
Sky Deutschland operate in Germany - and is available in Spain, - on Astra 19 witr a Sky Germany subscription.

So to say "It is a shame Sky don't currently broadcast to Spain like they do to Italy" - is incorrect as they do broadcast to Spain - it is just they are unable to offer theicard directly to people outside their market area.
" Just a shame they can't extend further south!" - they do - Astra 19 also carries Canal+ Spain - and can be received on 60 cm dishes in most of Spain.

Although News Corp own some or all of them.
All are for their own individual territories -  broadcast contracts with their content providers prevent them from being available in other countries.

"But it isn't legal" -
The use of a viewing card from one EU country in another EU country is perfectly legal.
It may break the T&Cs of the contract, but EU laws says it is legal (see pub landlady vs FA case a few years ago - but that did make a distinction between private and public places).

I noticed that when we were there Colin, but they broadcast lots of the same channels like Sky Atlantic etc. Just a shame they can't extend further south!

Sky Italia is transmitted in Italy not Sky UK.

It is a shame Sky don't currently broadcast to Spain like they do to Italy....then we'd all be happy with the current dishes, boxes and whatever monthly packages they offer.
