That's what I have Bob. Just got some light cracking in the external render.  I think that the old building construction ( adobe ) when single story has far greater flexibility & is on par with the new concrete earthquake construction  .

Gingernut. Yes my post was at that time. None of the deaths were reported until much later. So get your facts right before ahving digs at people. Considering the big quake is the one the brought about the unfortunate deaths of these people was about 25mins before my post it is not likely that anyone knew of any deaths. I was watching Spanish TV an nothing like that was reported uintil much later.

I am devasted by the loss of life the problems to rebuild, more earthquakes to come

However sometimes joking is peoples way to cope

You need to read between the lines and also understand peoples way of coping

Thanks for the info Clare, we were always told the Casino was the only building to survive. Obviously if it wasn´t built until over 50 years after that would explain it. They used to have many exhibitions of paintings etc. in there and also some small concerts.

The large earthquake was in 1829 the church was constructed in 1789 and the casino in 1882, it was a cultural casino which when we visited it on a school visit was very disappointed not to see any roulette tables or black jack like James Bond.

Our school was constructed  under earthquake safety regulations the first of its kind in Torrevieja and it was a big thing, all schools were constructed similar afterwards. As well as the buildings.

We also had a lot of ETA bomb scares in the early nineties luckily none ever happened but it was scary

We were told the only building to still stand in Torrevieja was the Casino. Lovely old place right on the front, went there many times for coffee when we lived that way.
On another note I have posted on the Earthquake post does anyone know if the Lorca tunnel on the A7 is closed, must be many making that journey soon.

Contigency plan would have to be thought out, Im just being pessimistic which is my nature and also there is the underlying worry that it could happen again stronger and bring about havoc and destruction

Torrevieja suffered greatly and the only really left standing was the church, when they rebuilt it, they decided to follow the american idea of blocks, which is why it is easy to move around and find things

not to be pessimistic but back just before the big quake which decimated torrevieja and affected our area, they had a lot of tremors the year leading up to the earthquake, so far since the earthquake in Japan there has been 5 earthquakes, however small , it seems a lot to me

I know what has happened is awful/terrible/whatever adjective you want to use.  But we are far safer than Japan etc.  I do not want to trivialise recent events. Try to sleep well tonight.  We are NOT on major fault lines. My heart goes out to those affected...

It a tragic affair but really what can we do.Nature will do it wants to and apart from emergency action I fear nothing can be done short term.

If you feel  that frightened when we get the tremors move outside! its not as if there is loads of buildings  around us, we are in a plate movement area this is a normal thing around here but the Lorca one was BAD.

Trish´s comment is what I was talking about.  Trish.  Please do not worry.  Yes there is the possibilty of another aftershock, but it is likely to be less than the last one, and far less serious.  Our houses are built to pretty good standards (despite twhat he doom gloomers say) so please sleep safe.

Oh Frankie, I was not trivialising what has happened here, but trying to say that we have a far less threat than Japan etc, who have only a few "minor" tremors, but which build up to catastrophic quakes. We have a lot of minor tremors which hopefully reduce the risk of a big one.  A lot of people will panic - especially vulnerable people.  I was only trying to put things into perspective.

I know that this is a very sad day for those who live or have friends and relatives in Lorca and surrounds.  I am sure we will all join together to sympathise with those who have lost their lives or have been injured in any way. But please don´t panic.  One of the reasons why this part of Spain is considered "safe" is that we have lots of "minor" tremors which release pressure on a regular basis.  Major earthquakes occur when there is a build up of pressure and then there is a catastrophic upheaval.

I was in the medical centre in Albox at the time of the second  ' quake .  Lots of movement and windows vibrating etc .  Staff rushing around and then the ambulance left .  Pictures of casualty at H/O  hospital being shown on Sky News .

Just seen Sky News, 4 people killed in Lora. I'm in sock and send my thoughts to the families who have died.

Watching LA1 on Spanish TV, Lorca has lots of damage, no one killed but 3 injured.Balconys falling into the street. Centre of emergency opened in the town hall. Seems there was a 6.3 in Granada on Monday but deep. These are thought to be aftershocks.

Biggest one yet, here in La Hortichuela, Albox. House is built on pilars and it moved as it should. Legs on the floor were wobbling side to side and they aren´t that fat. Wow!!
