Self drive van hire

If you hire a 7.5 tonner and it`s newer than 2007 it will be fitted with a digital tachograph and you will need to have a drivers card to put in it. If it`s an older vehicle with analogue tacho you will need to fill out a chart and insert it.

Even for private use, in Spain if the vehicle is fitted with tacho then it must be used. Any tacho offence incurs a fine of approx €1500 to €2000.

I was fined €1500 almost two years ago for not having a piece of paper I didn`t know that I didn`t have ! Basically when my tachograph had been recalibrated at it`s 2 yearly check, the garage failed to give me the additional piece of paper to go in my files and only stuck the dated label inside the tacho head. Even though the cops could see that the seal was there, because I didn`t have the other bit of paper, I was fined.
