Hi Ches

XP Pro was the typical version that was installed non-genuine. It maybe time for a reformat, you never know your machine may even be Win 7 compatible.

Hi Simon

This is XP Pro Service Pack 3. It was installed on the computer when I purchased it about 6 years ago. Maybe it is not a genuine copy. The computer seems to be working ok but when I tried to log into Hotmail a message came up with a warning saying "This is probably not the site you are looking for" with https¨: crossed through so I didn´t go any further. I use Google Chrome. I´ve had AVG installed for some time but that obviously doesn´t stop all attacks. I´ve uninstalled that and installed Spybot Search & Destroy. It has fixed several malware problems but I still have a black desktop and the same message in the right-hand bottom corner re the windows validation.

Hi Ches

Malware can be made display anything, or your PC could have been identified incorrectly as not a genuine copy.

Are you sure your copy of XP is 100% genuine?? When it fails the WGA it indicates it is not.

Is this XP Pro or HE.

Perform a malware scan i use malwarrebytes there is a free version but I found it so good I paid for the premium version. At https://www.malwarebytes.org/

Also worth running at a minimum a couple of online scans from the likes of  Bitdefender, Trendmicro, Kaspersky
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/scanner/online/free.html
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/free-virus-scan

or Google search :   online virus scan free

Just had a message when opening my computer saying "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This copy of windows did not pass genuine Windows validation". I have been running Windows XP for a number of years with no problem. Also found my desktop background picture has disappeared showing just my icons on a black background. Anyone any ideas on what´s going on?
